Grrrlz Rock! ‘08 Is Here!

3 11 2008

It’s true! This week marks the start of the Grrrlz Rock! concert series in Eugene, Ore.

Why am I so excited to announce this? For starters, it’s an awesome event. Over 20 shows during the month of November will showcase female artists in the Eugene area. It’s a chance for female artists to be recognized and join together in celebration and empowerment. I am also excited to announce GR! As an one of four interns, we have put a lot of work into getting people involved and interested in the GR! performances. This internship has been very rewarding as I not only prepare materials for my portfolio but also as I become more aware of the options of social media and the components of receiving media coverage for an event.

I am so proud of the media attention we have been receiving. Grrrlz Rock! has been and will be featured during November on many local radio stations, such as KRVM 91.9 and the University of Oregon radio station KWVA 88.1. Additionally Lane Community College’s newspaper, The Torch, has picked us up, and the Eugene Weekly has also provided coverage of performances and artists.

We have already created a large community of supporters through our Myspace page and now a Facebook group. It is exciting to see the supporters of the series grow each day through these sites.

While we keep receiving coverage from local media, my work has been mostly with social networks, our blog, and now the first podcast of GR! The podcast is called GR! Genesis. In the podcast I conduct an interview with the creator and founder of Grrrlz Rock! Cindy Ingram and discuss why GR! was created and its statement about the power of female performers. Although the podcast may be a little rough, considering it was my first one writing, recording and editing, I think it will be insightful for those who care about the concert series and those who are interested in issues concerning women.

I invite you to take a look at the different Web sites and pages we have created, along with listening to the podcast. I can’t wait to see the effects of our work at all the shows!

The first show starts this week:

Nov. 7 at Cosmic Pizza

$6, All Ages, 6 p.m.

Melissa Ruth

Iron Mango Orchestra

      Accordions Anonymous

   Scrambled Ape

     Touchy Feeliacs

Ali!

I really enjoyed reading your blog about GR! I’ve been hearing a lot of buzz around campus about GR! and after reading your post you’ve answered a lot of my questions about the concert series. I have to say, the bands’ names are all absolutely hilarious and original. Just hearing the name sparks curiosity and makes me want to go watch Scrambled Ape just to see what they sound like in a live setting.

I think the best part about GR! is that it has created several internships and additional opportunities for students to get involved with the concerts. It sounds like you’ve had a very positive experience with GR! and your progress with media and social networking speaks for itself! Congratulations with that!

Thanks Sylvie. I have to say I wasn’t expecting this much out of the internship. There are so many events and functions going on in our community I really recommend finding one and helping out even for just a few hours a week. I’m glad I did!

Thanks Lisa,

I’m glad I had the chance to be in your class this summer and I hope things are going well for you and your family. I am starting an internship tomorrow with The Ulum Group downtown – really excited!
