Has The Internet Gone Too Far?
Honestly, I think it has. Not to say that if I had to do social media networking for a company that I wouldn’t do it, however, there are some things out there that I think are just unnecessary. It makes me afraid of what the future may bring, children living their lives through virtual realities online, becoming socially incapable of establishing real face-to-face relationships. Is that what we want? While the green movement is in place, its most basic idea is to be more in-tune with the environment so we can function in harmony. With the growing invasion of the internet into our daily lives, it seems we will be more out-of-touch with the environment and more engulfed in ME, ME, ME!
I know I am in the generation that is considered an “Internet Native,” but currently, I feel more like an alien. In my PR class we have just been introduced to social media tools, making me overwhelmed and praying that my future career will give me more contact with actual people. I don’t know what I would do without being able to conduct extensive research online and gather news information, but there is a certain line that is crossed between using it as a tool, and as an extension of yourself. I won’t deny that I have Facebook account or write a blog, but anything going beyond that I feel can be insecure, narcissistic, and down right frightening. However, I have a feeling these initial thoughts will change the more I learn about how these tools are actually used in PR.
The Drunk Idiot’s Guide to Twitter has propelled some of my thinking. It’s not exactly the most eloquent, but it definitely registers with my current emotions.
UPDATE: Now that I have been using Twitter for about a month now I feel less scared. In fact, it has been a useful tool. I have been able to ask my followers questions, receive replies, see what my professors are thinking about and PR professionals, keep track of news headlines, and even take advantage of special offers. Although I still have a small community on Twitter, it is nice to know other people care about useful information, even if it is discussing a class assignment. So, Mr. Twitterpants, I am sorry. I guess you are my friend now.
Australia just got google ’street view’ and it has convicted some people and caught others cheating or sleeping or coming out of pornshops. Look it up on google news, it’s quite comical actually.

Wow. Google Street View in itself is pretty amazing and yes a little frightening. It reminds me of big brother watching over everyone. I wonder if the police force will take advantage of its capabilities.
